If you live in the gulf coast region, like Mobile or Baldwin Counties, you have undoubtedly seen swarms of termites sometime between Mother's Day and Father's Day each year.
What are Termite Swarmers?
After a colony of subterranean termites has matured - a process that takes several years- the colony begins forming Termite Swarmers, which are the reproductive termites. Once these reproductives have been formed, and the conditions are just right, the colony will expel the Swarmers into the environment, often in the tens to hundreds of thousands. The ultimate goal is that a male and female Swarmer will pair up, lose their wings, burrow into the soil, and, begin to form a new colony.
The good news: these reproductive termites are not particularly efficient, and they often die, without ever forming a new colony.
The bad news: if you see these termites swarming inside your home, you likely have an infestation inside your wall cavities, in your crawl space, or in your attic. When this occurs, you will likely see the Swarmers exiting around AC vents, or out of cracks around window trim, door trim, or your ceiling molding.
This is not something you want to see in your home.
What are the myths about Termite Swarmers? If you find that Swarmers have entered your home as described above, your initial instinct may be to contact your termite prevention company. However, if you do, you will likely be told, "don't worry... termite Swarmers do not eat wood." While, this might be technically true, it is also fundamentally false. While termite Swarmers do not have the mouth parts to chew cellulose, they are living organisms, and, thus, must be fed. That's where the workers come in. Worker termites are responsible for foraging, finding cellulose, eating it, and then feeding it to the rest of the colony, including the Swarmers. Consequently, claiming that Swarmers do not eat would be like claiming baby birds do not eat, simply because they are fed by one of their parents.
So, what should I do if I have Termite Swarmers inside my house? First, you should probably contact an experienced termite fraud and damage claim attorney. They can help you get your home inspected to determine whether your termite prevention company ever provided the promised termite prevention treatments in the first place and then help you figure out the real scope of your damages.
